Weekly Topic?

Tamie has given me an idea. How about we take turns picking a weekly topic to debate? That way it'll keep this blog from becoming a ghost town.
This is what I propose:
On Monday of everyweek, one writer picks a topic and writes about their views on said topic.
They then, pick one other writer at the end of their entry to lead the next weeks discussion. Other writers can add entries throughout the week on their opinions.
We'll rotate out every week.
So Tamie has already started this week's, "Children and Fundraising"
(We just have to all agree if anything gets heated we can just be civil to each other)
Sound good?

BTW--Andy, you started this..where the heck are ya?

that sounds cool... but I also like how people can post an idea or funny story or whatever whenever they feel like it :)

that's the beauty of having a blog... right... to be able to convey your thoughts and opinions in an open forum for discussion...

so limiting ourselves to only one topic might be a little constricting... yes... no... maybe :)

I agree that we could use some sort of regular structure since sometimes we go a while without posting (like me lately hiiiii), but I'm not sure that picking a topic and sticking with it will work. Like tamie, I like being able to just randomly post whatever pops into my head.

I think if you have a specific topic you want the others to discuss on (like we have been doing lately, with the r&s, siblings, work etc posts) then by all means post it. If you just feel like posting something random (like Andy's contact lense story, or some of your art/photos/whatever) then go ahead...

I guess I didn't really add anything new... um... so yea.

hello all i'm still here :D

I think both ways are good, I just thought it could be something different to separate this blog from our personal blogs.

i like the topic idea (and also enjoy the random stuff everyone posts and don't want to lose that but dont see why one would exclude the other).

one thing that might be helpful is if we comment/respond to someone's topic under the original post (like we are doing now, yay). keeps things a little more organized instead of having to try to track through a half dozen posts on the same topic each with 2 comments.

I'll put my vote behind both weekly topic and randomness.

Let's go ahead and select a topic on Monday and blog on said topic throughout the week with anyone free to post randomness at any time.

I apologize for being absent lately. But I agree with Jodi that some structure would be helpful and that doing something to differentiate this blog from our individual blogs would be a good idea; otherwise, we'd be hard-pressed to blog in our own blogs as well as a team blog.

I had something in mind similar to what Jodi proposed, but I'd been thinking about how the structured format would work. I'm glad to see she was the catalyst we needed.

I agree with furyouhin... the problem exists when people make seperate posts in response to a topic... like the siblings topic... how many individual posts were there when comments would have been much easier...

it's easier to read through and organize something when you can see what people think in the comments section (on my personal blog we get into great discussions in the comments sections even getting up to 100 comments...) instead of everyone doing thier own post on the subject...

might I also suggest HaloScan comments... since you don't have to sign in and it opens the comments into another window...

That's a good way to go. We'll post whenever we like (satisfying the Random camp) and keep responses under each entry (satisfying the Order camp).

Tamie, if you would like to institute Haloscan, please do. I'm willing to give it a try. I've never used it, though, so I'm afraid you'll have to install it. (Will we preserve all comments to this point?) You're an Admin on this blog with all admin's rights, so you shouldn't experience an issue.

I'll have to check with my personal I.T. guy (ie my fiance Andrew) cause he installed HaloScan on my blog for me...

but I will check with him about preserving the pre-existing comments... and if I can't do that... I won't impliment the change :)

haloscan doesn't delete the comments already made via blogger's own commenting feature but it doesn't allow you to view them either. The net effect is "old comments go away." i just installed it on my test blog to err, test it.

personally, i'm not wild about haloscan because of the advertising in the comment window.

I like the concensus(?) everyone came up with too: random blogs ok, topic on Monday, with responses to the topic as comments. I don't know what HaloScan is, so I have no opinion, although disappearing comments and advertising don't sound appealing.
