Five Firsts

1. What is the first story you remember?

An Austrian fairy tale about the horrible things that happen to a child that does not take care of his personal hygiene. The boy dies, because his fingernails grow so long he can’t eat or perform any other bodily functions. Oh, and rats nest in his hair because he doesn’t comb it.

2. Who was your first love?

When I was five, it was a boy that lived next door in North Carolina. He followed me every where and did whatever I wanted. He often got in trouble because of me. I played with his guns while he played with my dolls. He never married.

3. Where was your first home that you paid for yourself?

I rented an efficiency apartment over a grocery on the main street in a small town. I watched the drunks and drug dealers from my front windows for evening entertainment. I was one block from the railroad tracks and I had a roof top courtyard (the tar-paper-covered roof of the grocery store.)

4. When did you realize you were a “grown up”?

When I decided I couldn’t quit my job because I was annoyed. I walked out on many jobs throughout my twenties without one backward glance. Now, I think fifteen million times before breathing funny.

5. How often do you change your socks?

Every time they ask for it.

1. What is the first story you remember?

probably disney's the jungle book... I remember going to see that movie when I was really little and my dad would read me the story before bed...

2. Who was your first love?

when I was eight... there was a little boy in my grade who invited me to his costume birthday party... he asked me to come as snow white... so I did... and when I showed up... he was dressed in a prince charming costume (tights and everything)... I had my "first kiss" that day :)

3. Where was your first home that you paid for yourself?

it's the townhouse that Andrew and I are currently renting (and setting up as our first home together once we get married in 12 DAYS)... it's nice and clean and is going to have a kick ass kitchen... hopefully some day soon... we'll get a doggy (or two)...

4. When did you realize you were a “grown up”?

when I got my name badge from the att&tizzle... it was like I was finally at an adult job... with a pension plan... like... I have worked here for almost 2 years... and that's the longest I've EVER worked somewhere... like... THIS is a REAL job... a "grown up" job... damn...

5. How often do you change your socks?

um... I don't usually wear socks... flip flops are cool like that :)

1. An incredibly crappy story from sunday school about a dying boy who wants to go to heaven and he'd told that so long as he dies holding hand up, Jesus will see him and take him away. So the poor little bastard tries to keep his hand up, but of course that's impossible once he falls asleep and many pages are spent on the kid's anguish as he's convinced he won't go to heaven and then a friend of his helps him by propping up his hand with some pillows. Then he dies and the last page is this maudlin illustration of a whiter-than-white Jebus in blue robes looking over the dead boy with his pathetic limp hand propped up. This story forever ruined Christianity for me. I have no idea what the writer thought the point was, but my take-away was "if you don't perform some random-ass and completely meaningless stunt, no matter if you're an innocent dying child, Jesus won't give you a second look." No Soup for j00!

2. Gilligan. Yes, the one with the island. No, I'm not proud of it.

3. Queen Anne Victorian in San Francisco, paid 320K, lost it in a divorce. The last time i checked, it had exchanged hands for $2.4M. Crikey, i should have killed the husband and kept the house.

4. The first time a bag boy offered to carry out my groceries. Fucker.

5. Daily.

Ooh, ooh, ooh ... can I post even though I'm not a member of the group blog???

1. What is the first story you remember?
The little engine that could.

2. Who was your first love?
A guy who shouldn't have been. One of my greatest pleasures in life is the day that I ran into him, years later, at a bookstore and I was looking H-O-T ... and he was not. :)

3. Where was your first home that you paid for yourself?
I've never had a mortgage, but my first rent was when I was 18 years old.

4. When did you realize you were a “grown up”?
When I finished college and I was out in the world on my own.

5. How often do you change your socks?
Daily. Who doesn't? Wait a minute ... I take that back. I don't want to know. ;)
